Pochinok ((ロシア語:Почи́нок)) is a town and the administrative center of Pochinkovsky District in Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located on the Khmara River (Dnieper's basin) southeast of Smolensk, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: ==History== It was founded in 1868 as a station on the Riga–Oryol railway. It was named after one of the many ''pochinok'' villages in Smolensk Governorate. The word ''pochinok'' () means "a new settlement or village built on a clear spot". Pochinok was granted town status in 1926.
